Friends, Supporters and Citizens of Wylie,
I
hope you and your family are having a great Summer! We have been busy at our
house with planning our vacation, attending summer camps, visiting with family
and friends and supporting our community. I wanted to write to you again this
month and share with you some of the activities that are happening in and around
our city.
I
hope you all have taken advantage of the Summer Concert’s at Olde City Park , as
well as movie night last Friday evening. The concerts have been great and it has
been so much fun to get out and visit with our citizens at these events. These
activities really help Wylie keep that “hometown” feeling. I hope you and your
family are planning to attend the Wylie Independence Day program (Fireworks) at
Founder’s Park this evening at 9:30pm.
I
had the opportunity to attend the June Chamber of Commerce luncheon and listen
to Chamber President, Mike Agnew, talk about the State of the Chamber, and all
the things they are doing to support our community.
Many of our new businesses are also attending the Business Card Exchange on
Wednesday mornings at Woodbridge Golf Club, and this has been a good way to
connect with our small business owners and support them as they grow their
business here in Wylie.
Also, as you may have noticed, dirt is beginning to be moved at the location of
our new shopping center, Woodbridge Crossing. Soon you will have more shopping
options available to you right here in Wylie , Texas!
This year’s high school graduation once again highlighted our outstanding Wylie
students and their parents, It was an honor for Tammie and I to be able to
attend that great event and represent our city.
This past month I also had the opportunity to speak at the Wylie Rotary Club
luncheon and share with them our plans for the future of our city.
I
have also had the opportunity to visit with Congressman Ralph Hall and
Congressman Sam Johnson about our city. They are anxious to support us as we
grow forward.
A
lot of great things are happening in our community. In the coming weeks, you
will start to see activity on the expansion of FM 1378. We will soon be holding
a ground breaking ceremony for our new City Hall, Public Library and Recreation
Center . Additionally in the coming month’s we will be continuing with our
neighborhood revitalization program in some of our older parts of town. It is
truly an exciting time to be in Wylie , Texas .
Please mark you calendars for our first Wylie Town Hall on August 11, 2008 at
the Bart Peddicord Community Center at 7:00 pm. More details will be forthcoming
about this event. We had hoped to schedule this sooner but with all the Summer
vacations, we had to hold off until August.
Also in the planning stages is a meeting with our Home Owners Associations to
get feedback from them on issues, concerns and ideas within their neighborhoods;
and the Mayor’s Quarterly Breakfast. This breakfast will serve as an informal
meeting with 15 to 20 citizens to come in and visit with the Mayor and staff on
a quarterly basis. Citizens will be randomly selected to attend from our list of
people who receive the eWylie Newsletter.
And, check out my updated web site with information about the office of the
Mayor and upcoming events at

I
believe in Wylie and my goal is to promote and grow our city in a positive way.
When our citizens think of Wylie, I want them to think, “It’s good to be home.”

grow forward!

Friends, Supporters and Citizens of Wylie,
I believe great things are before us and I’m happy
to be able to share with you some of the activities that are happening
in and around our city.
It's hard to believe that I was sworn in just
three weeks ago on Friday night, May 16, 2008. The city moved up the
Oath of Office due to a trip to Las Vegas for the International
Conference for Shopping Centers. We felt it was important that the
“Mayor” attend, instead of the “Mayor-Elect.” I was able to spend three
days meeting with commercial and retail companies and developers, who
have an interest in coming to Wylie. We were also able to spend time
with the developer of the Woodbridge Crossing Shopping Center, Direct
Development. If things go as planned, that shopping center should be
completed and filled with businesses by mid to late 2009.
After getting back to Wylie, I have been able to attend and participate
in the following functions:
-
Attended two Wylie Chamber of Commerce
business card exchange breakfasts.
-
Attended the monthly Wylie Chamber of Commerce
luncheon.
-
Spoke at a ground breaking ceremony for the
Savage Company.
-
Spoke at the Downtown Merchants Meeting.
-
Spoke at the Friends of the Library meeting.
-
Attended a Waste Management Committee meeting.
-
Attended part of a Wylie ISD school board
meeting.
-
Attended two Wylie EDC meetings (they start at
6:00am!)
-
Chaired my first Birmingham Land Trust
meeting.
-
Presented three Proclamations to three young
ladies who received the Girl Scout’s highest award, the Gold Award.
-
Sent out 22 letters to our Wylie ISD
Birmingham Scholars.
-
Washed cars to raise money for one of our
young citizen’s.
-
Named a day after a retiring teacher.
-
Chaired my first City Council Meeting as the
Mayor.
It has been a busy three weeks, and it is an honor
to be able to represent our community. I believe one of the mayor’s main
focuses should be to promote the city…to be the head cheerleader…
As we grow forward, we have a lot to be excited about:
-
Soon we will have the ground breaking for our
new public library, recreation center and our City Hall.
-
Our library will grow from 7,000 sq feet to
over 45,000 sq feet.
-
We are working to get 1378 expanded.
-
June 12, 2008 will be our first Summer Concert
Series for the year with “Elvis” in Wylie!
-
July 3, 2008, we’ll have fireworks at
Founder’s Park
I want to open up better communications and find
ways to communicate better with the public. In an effort to do this, I
have asked our city staff to set up the following events:
-
Town Halls to update the community on our bond
projects and to get feedback from you.
-
A meeting with our Home Owners Associations to
get feedback from them on issues, concerns and ideas within their
neighborhoods
-
The Mayor’s Quarterly Breakfast. This is an
informal meeting with 15 to 20 citizens to come in and visit with
the Mayor and staff on a quarterly basis. Citizens will be randomly
selected to attend from our list of people who receive the eWylie
Newsletter.
I believe in Wylie and my goal is to promote and
grow our city in a positive way. When our citizens think of Wylie, I
want them to think, “It’s good to be home.”
Wylie is going to grow, but I never want us to take that “hometown”
feeling out of Wylie…
So I ask for your input, your feedback and your support, my new city
email address is eric.hogue@wylietexas.gov
Until next time, may God bless the great city of Wylie , Texas as we
continue to grow forward!

Friends, Supporters and Citizens of Wylie,
Words
can not express my thanks and appreciation for all the support I received during
this campaign. As I watched the totals come in Saturday evening, my family and I
grew more and more excited. With your help and support, we did it! I am very
humbled by the honor and trust the citizens of Wylie have placed in my hands. I
will not take this position lightly. I want to be a mayor who will listen to the
desires and needs of our community and work to make these things a reality.
I want
to thank all of the people who have supported me in this campaign, it has been a
long journey, but a new chapter in our community is about to begin. I want to
thank Mayor John Mondy for his phone call on Saturday night, after the final
election numbers came out. He offered his congratulations and support as we
begin this transition of new leadership at city hall. I want to thank my
campaign treasurer, Earl Newsom, for his support and never-ending encouragement.
I
would love to list every person who helped with this campaign, but I don’t think
there is enough room on this paper to list each and every name. These people
made the difference in the outcome of this race with their support and
encouragement by passing out flyers, talking to their friends, putting a sign in
their yard, sending emails, standing near the polls, making phone calls, talking
to their neighbors and most importantly, casting their vote. I also want to
thank all of the young people who held up my campaign sign on election day near
Ballard Street and Highway 78. They reminded people to get out and vote. It was
a long day for them, but they did it without question.
I want
to thank the current council members and their spouses: Rick and Alicia White,
and David and Barbara Goss who supported my campaign from beginning to end. I
want to thank our former mayors and council members, along with their spouses,
who also supported and encouraged me during this entire race: William and Ann
Martin, Jim and Lois Swartz, Earl and Carol Sue Newsom and Steve and Ruthie
Wright
My
campaign was about bringing people together with different ideas, beliefs and
goals for our community. Everyone has something to offer and I believe when we
work together, Wylie will come out as the winner!
I want
to congratulate Councilman Rick White and Councilman Carter Porter on their
victories. I also want to commend Bennie Jones and Chris Trout for their
willingness to step up and run for office. I want to congratulate the school
board members who were elected, Ralph James, Ronnie Fetzer and Lance Goff. I
also want to thank those individuals who placed their name on the ballot and
were willing to serve our school district; Barbara Goss, Baron Cook and Jim
Griffith.
I want
to especially thank my wife, Tammie, and our sons, Zach and Mason, for their
never-ending support over the last 75 days. We planned and campaigned each and
every night of the week, for this dream to become a reality. I could not have
done it without them!
The
race is over and now it’s time to get to work!
For the promise of Wylie,
Eric Hogue

Friends, Supporters and Citizens of Wylie,
Wow…it’s hard to believe that it was
over 60 days ago, when I turned in my paperwork to run for the office of Mayor
in Wylie, Texas. Since that time, I have had the opportunity to talk with many
of you about the future of our community, and how we can put an action plan in
place for our city as we “grow” forward.
Since March 5, 2008, we have put out
over 250 yard signs, 12 big signs and have walked door to door placing over
3,000 brochures in most of the neighborhoods in our community. I have had the
opportunity to speak about my vision for Wylie at two candidate forums. I have
also been able to talk about our plans and goals for Wylie by answering
questionnaires for the Wylie News newspaper, and the Wylie Today web site.
As I passed out brochures in the neighborhoods, I was able to speak to a number
of our residents about the future of Wylie, and we talked about their concerns
and goals for our city. I have walked around our downtown area talking to some
of our local business owners about their wants and desires to help promote our
historic downtown. I have been able to meet with members of one of our newer
neighborhoods about my reasons for running for mayor of this great town. And, I
have received more phone calls and emails than I can count from citizens
offering their support and encouragement.
Many of you have also played a key
role in this campaign. I received the exact amount of funding I needed for my
signs, brochures and advertising. Each of my campaign donations were from
individuals supporting my run for office. Along the way, I turned down offers
from special interest groups, because my loyalty as mayor should only be to one
group…the citizens of Wylie!
And now it’s up to the voters of
Wylie to get out and cast their vote. We have two days of early voting left,
Monday and Tuesday, May 5 and 6, 2008 at Wylie City Hall from 7:00am to 7:00pm.
Then on May 10, 2008, its Election Day and the polls will be open from 7:00am to
7:00pm.
My goal in this campaign has been to
focus on what I call, The Promise of Wylie and to give the citizens of our
community a choice. Together we can make a difference on Election Day for the
future of our community.
As always, my goal as your next
Mayor is to uphold the responsibilities of the Office with commitment,
dedication, integrity, professionalism, leadership and respect.
Please continue to keep my family
and I in your thoughts and prayers, as we countdown to May 10, 2008, Election
Day!

Friends, Supporters and Citizens of Wylie,
It’s hard to believe that early
voting begins this week and that we are less than two weeks away from election
day. I want to encourage each of you to get out and vote. Also, please send this
email to your fellow citizens, your family and your friends who live in Wylie.
Together we can make a difference on election day for the future of our
community.
I remember the day I filed my paperwork, just a couple of short months ago and
now the campaign is almost over. Since that time, I have met and visited with so
many good people in our community. Your encouragement has been a great source of
support and strength. I am so excited about our future, we just need to get
everyone out there to vote!
My vision for the city is really simple:
First, I believe responsible leadership means having a well thought out
plan and not empty ideas without an understanding of its results. We can
accomplish great things for the improvement of our community if we all work
together!
Second, I want to get to work on the completion of our bond projects most
importantly, the improvement to our roads. We must have better roads to improve
the traffic flow within our city.
Third, We must responsibly manage the growth yet to come to our city. We
must make sure that we have the necessary infrastructure to meet the needs of
those who currently live here; and those who will move into Wylie. This includes
the completion of our new public library, fire station, recreation center and
city hall.
Fourth, we must promote our city at the county, state and federal levels
of our government more actively. We are the eighth fastest growing city in the
nation, we need to use a little of that political muscle to promote and grow our
city in a positive way.
Fifth, We need to seek out opportunities to attract more commercial and
retail businesses to our community. Wylie is a gold mine of residents just
waiting for more restaurants, retail businesses and commercial opportunities.
The key for this to happen, is for all of us to get out and vote!
As always, my goal as your next Mayor is to uphold the responsibilities of the
Office with commitment, dedication, integrity, professionalism, leadership and
respect.
Please continue to keep my family and I in your thoughts and prayers, as we
continue down the road to City Hall..

Friends, Supporters and Citizens of Wylie,
“As an elected county official, I
have tried to stay out of municipal races. But when a man of Eric Hogue’s talent
and character offers his service, I just can not stay on the sideline. Wylie has
a wonderful opportunity to elect a great leader in Eric Hogue!” Joe Barton,
Collin County Constable, Precinct 2
I want to thank Mr. Barton for his kind words and his support. I am very excited
about the opportunity to serve the citizens of Wylie as your next Mayor. I
believe we have so many good things ahead of us; but in order for us to be
successful, we must have the support from our county, state and federal
officials. As I have said many times before, Wylie is the forgotten city of
Collin county, and we need to be in front of these officials to promote our
plans for the future of our community. We must have a good, positive
relationship with these officials for the betterment of Wylie. They need to know
what is happening in Wylie and we need to use our “political muscle” of being
the eighth fastest growing city in the nation to get the services and resources
needed to enhance our city.
As mayor, I believe my primary focus should be on building a strong network with
each and every group and organization that interacts with our city. The Mayor
needs to be a positive force in moving Wylie forward.
Thanks again to Constable Barton for his kind words.

Friends, Supporters and Citizens of Wylie,
We are only seven days away from
early voting and 19 days away from election day. This continues to be an
exciting campaign season for me, my family and the voters of Wylie. I have met
and visited with so many good people in our community.
Your encouragement continues to be a great source of strength and encouragement.
I really appreciate all of your support and your vote of confidence!
Responsible leadership means having a well thought out plan and not empty ideas
without an understanding of its results. I believe, we can accomplish great
things for the improvement of our community if we all work together!
During the next three years, I want to work to make sure we see the completion
of all our bond projects including, the improvement to our roads. We must have
better roads to improve the traffic flow within our city. We also need to see
the completion of our new public library, fire station, recreation center and
city hall.
We must also responsibly manage the growth yet to come in our city. We must make

Early voting starts April 28 – May 6, 2008 at Wylie City Hall , and Election Day
is May 10, 2008.

Office with commitment, dedication, integrity, professionalism, leadership and
respect.

Friends, Supporters and Citizens of Wylie,
It’s hard to believe that we are
only 14 days away from early voting, and 26 days away from election day. Please
don’t forget to vote!
This has truly been an exciting campaign season. The citizens I have had the
opportunity to meet, and the encouragement you all have provided to me and my
family has been unbelievable. I really appreciate your support and your vote of
confidence!
People have asked what do you plan to do once you have been elected mayor. Here
is a short list of some of my first priorities:
-
Work with our city council, our
staff and our citizens to get the bond projects completed (especially our
roads). We voted on these issues in 2005, and it is past time for these
projects to be started! We're going to need to work with our county
officials on some of the road projects to get them moving forward, so it
looks like I’ll be making some trips up to the county court house in
McKinney !
-
Set up town halls around the
city to get feedback from our citizens on their goals and desires for Wylie.
Meet with the Home Owners Associations (HOAs) to get feedback from them on
the future of our community. Meet with our downtown merchants, our chamber
of commerce and our school district to start ongoing communications with
these groups on our plans and goals for Wylie.
-
Work with our Wylie Economic
Development Corporation (WEDC), the city staff and businesses (retail and
commercial) to get them to come to Wylie to give us more shopping options,
and to give us some much need tax relief.
And that’s just my first 100 days in
office!
I believe in Wylie and it’s future. I want to build a Wylie that will be a place
my sons will want to come back to, after they graduate from college, and live
and raise their families. I want that for all of our citizens and their
children.
As always, my goal as your next Mayor is to uphold the responsibilities of the
Office with commitment, dedication, integrity, professionalism, leadership
and respect.
Please continue to keep my family and I in your thoughts and prayers, as we
continue down the road to City Hall.

Friends, Supporters and Citizens of Wylie,
Only
43 days left until the election
May 10, 2008 and 32 days until early voting starts!
It has been another busy
week with the campaign,
putting out yard signs and visiting with the voters!
We have placed nearly 200 signs
in the yards of supporters
and voters from all over the city. Thanks to all who
have shown their support with taking a yard sign. We still
have plenty left, if you would like a sign, please call or
email me, and we'll get one to you!
This week, I've had a question
emailed to me and I thought I would share it with you,
"What are the Mayor's
responsibilities and is it a full-time job?"
It's a good
question and can't be answered in a quick reply, so bear
with me while I explain how our government works.
Our type of government
in Wylie, according to the City Charter, is the
council-manager form of government. This
system of government is used in the majority of American
cities with populations over 12,000.
Below is the explanation of
this type of government from Wylie's City Charter:
"The municipal government provided
in this Charter shall be known as the council-manager form
of government. Under its provisions, the city council,
consisting of the mayor and councilmen elected by and
responsible to the people, shall appoint a city manager (who
shall be responsible to the city council for the
administration of the government of the city).
All powers of the city shall be
vested in the city council and shall be exercised in the
manner prescribed by this Charter, or if the manner not be
prescribed, then in such manner as may be prescribed by
ordinance, the state constitution or the statutes of this
state."
The City Charter also
states specific roles and responsibilities for the
Mayor and Council members:
Duties of the
Mayor:
The mayor shall be recognized as the official head
of the city government for all ceremonial purposes and by
the governor for purposes of military law but shall have no
administrative duties. He shall be the chairman and shall
preside at all meetings of the city council. The mayor shall
vote on all propositions before the city council, but shall
have no power to veto. He shall, when authorized by the city
council, sign all official documents, such as ordinances,
resolutions, conveyances, grant agreements, official plats,
contracts, and bonds.
The Mayor and
Council is the legislative body; its members are the
community's decision makers. The
Mayor and Council, approves the budget, determines
the tax rate, focuses
on the community's goals,
community growth, land use development, capital
improvement plans, capital financing, and strategic
planning. The Mayor and Council hire a professional city
manager to carry out the administrative responsibilities
and they supervise
the manager's performance.
To sum this all up, in
Wylie, the Mayor's job is not a full-time position, but it
still requires a huge amount of a person's time. Basically,
if Wylie were a business, the City Council would be the
Board of Directors, with the Mayor as the Chairman of the
Board, and the City Manager as the President and CEO of the
company. Obviously government is different than a business,
but this example at least gives you an idea of
how the
system is suppose to work.
If you
would like more details about the council-manager form of
government, please click on the
"Mayor's Role"
button on this web site.
I hope this
answers the question, and please let me know if you have any
other questions or concerns.
Thanks again for your
support and please keep my family and I in your
thoughts and prayers, as we continue down the road to City
Hall.

Friends, Supporters and Citizens of Wylie,
It has been a very busy
week for the campaign. We have placed over 150 signs in the yards of voters from
all over the city. Thanks to all who have shown their support with taking a yard
sign. We still have plenty left, if you would like a sign, please call or email
me, and we'll get one to you!
I've had a question
emailed to me and I thought I would share it with you, "What do you plan to
do, once you are elected Mayor of Wylie?"
Once May 10th has come
and gone and I have been sworn into office, I want to insure that every citizen
of Wylie has a chance to have their voices heard. I am proposing that during my
first 100 days in office, the mayor and council hold town halls around the
community to allow citizens to be updated on the city's bond projects, new
commercial and residential developments and all other activities within the city
and the surrounding communities. These town halls would also serve as an
opportunity for the community to provide feedback and input on the direction and
future of our city.
As mayor I would also
like to meet with each of the Home Owners Associations, the Downtown Merchant's
Association and The Wylie Chamber of Commerce to get input and feedback from
them as to their needs and ideas for the betterment of our community.
I would also propose
that the city council hold a joint meeting with the Wylie Independent School
Board to get an update on all the district's plans and needs as we move into the
future. I would also promote regular meetings for the joint school board and
council committee to insure that we stay informed and prepared.
And to round out my
first 100 days, I want to meet with our county and state officials to update
them on the state of the city, our plans going forward and discuss the support
we need from them for our community.
My over-all goal as your next Mayor is to promote our city and uphold the
responsibilities of the Office of the Mayor with commitment, dedication,
integrity, professionalism, leadership and respect.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions; and please keep
my family and I in your thoughts and prayers, as we continue down the road to
City Hall.

Friends, Supporters and Citizens of Wylie,
We've got 57 days left until election day, and only
44 days until early voting begins!
Be sure to check out the
newest web page, called
Fast Facts. It gives a brief history
of my time on the Wylie City Council.
A number of you have allowed your names to be added
to my endorsement page and I want to thank you for
showing your support in this way. It takes dedicated
people from all
different walks of life, with different views,
different opinions and different ideas
to make a successful community, and a place
we want to call home. I want to thank each of you
for your support and your willingness to stand with
me during this campaign. If you would like to be
added to this list, just send me a note.
The yard signs have arrived! For those of you who
have requested a yard sign, we will be distributing
them this weekend. If you would like a yard sign,
please let me know, and we'll get one to you!
Many of you have also been generous with a donation
for my campaign and that is greatly appreciated. It
does takes funds for those yard signs, newspaper ads
and mailers, and I really appreciate your help in
this area.
My goal as your next Mayor is to uphold the
responsibilities of the Office with commitment,
dedication, integrity, professionalism, leadership
and respect.
Please continue to keep my family and I in your

Friends, Supporters and Citizens of Wylie,
It's hard to believe a week has
passed since I turned in my paperwork to have my name placed on the ballot for
mayor of Wylie. I am honored and humbled by the number of people who wanted to
sign my petition and offer their encouragement and support. I have also gotten
so many great phone calls and emails from old friends, new friends and great
supporters, since the announcement came out about my candidacy.
One of the questions I have received from a number of you is in regards to the
time of the city council meetings. Many of you are not able to make the meetings
due to them starting at 6:00pm on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. I
was on the council when we moved the meetings from 7:00pm to 6:00pm due to a
number of reasons (some council members wanted the earlier time, staff stayed
at the building after work waiting for the meeting to start and citizen
participation was not very strong). Since that time we discussed this issue
a few times, and it is my understanding the that current council also reviewed
this issue recently and it was denied.
When I am elected your mayor, I will
put this item back on the agenda for discussion and vote. I believe we need to
move these meetings back to 7:00pm to allow for greater citizen participation.
Additionally, many of our senior staff members now live in the city, and it was
give them the opportunity to spent a couple of hours with their families before
the meeting begins.
The bottom line is that this is our
community and we all need a chance to voice our concerns, issues and opinions.
If moving a meeting back to 7:00pm allows more participation, then I believe we
should do it.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions regarding my
candidacy.
Please keep my family and I in your thoughts and prayers, as we continue down
the road to City Hall.

Friends, Supporters and Citizens of Wylie,
Today, I
am pleased to announce the creation of "Eric's Blog" on my website. This will be
just another way that we can communicate with each other; and way that I can
share with you my vision for The Promise of Wylie. If you have any
questions you would like to see in this format, please send them to me, and I'll
get them posted with an answer.
A lot of
exciting things have happened in Wylie the past couple of weeks. With the
announcement of the funding for the
long-anticipated
multi-sport complex by Nuevo Frontier Christian Sports, Inc. (NFC Sports); and
the announcement regarding the Woodbridge Crossing Shopping Center (with a Super
Target), these are exciting times in our community. I remember when this land
was first brought before the city council in 2006, and now construction will
begin in the next couple of months. It has taken over two years, but it will be
worth it for all our citizens. Congratulations and thanks to the city staff and
Wylie Economic Development Corporation for all of their hard work in this whole
process.
Also, don't forget to vote today!
Sincerely,
Eric
